LARP Aid - Fighting for a Good Cause

Three months ago I had just discovered how popular LARP was in the UK. Ever since I wrote this article, I have explored the world of LARP and discovered that they are an amazing bunch. I have been blown away by the strength and diversity of the UK's LARP communities, especially when they all come together to do something truly amazing.

LARP Aid is a perfect example of how people can use their hobby to help others.

Every year, these guys bring together hundreds of Larpers from various different genres, in order to raise money for a worthy cause. This year they have chosen to support the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Trust, a charity that is very close to my heart.

The weekend will consist of various events and tournaments wherein, champions will be decided. As LARP Aid is an event that encompasses several genres, there will be a vast variety of games and contests to see. If you don't LARP or if you're new to the hobby, It'll be a great opportunity to see the variety of systems out there.

As well as a plethora of games and activities, there will be several traders present pedalling their wares. For all the Nerfers out there interested in some high quality melee weapons, this'll be a great opportunity to get tooled up.

Entertainment will also be plentiful at LARP Aid as you can expect some fine folk to perform at the event during the day and into the evening. There is even a Bard competition for all the budding artists and storytellers that will be present.

One of the LARP groups that will be going are the lovely chaps from 'Big Damn Heroes'. Their Nerf based LARP system is of particular interest to me and since I was unable to attend their latest event, it'll be a great opportunity to find out what they get up to.

LARP Aid will be held near Ashford, Kent from 26th to the 28th April and costs between £5 for a single day spectator and £31 for the whole weekend including camping.

If you can make it, I'd strongly advise you to go. Even if you have no idea what LARP is it'll be a great day out and you'll meet some wonderful and exciting people, just before you watch them knock the toffy out of each other in combat. I will be attending this event and I will be covering the weekends activities for UK Nerf, as well as donating a few things for the charity auction. I'd love to meet you all there.

All in all, it's not a lot of money for a whole heap load of fun. Plus, you'll know your money is going to a good cause. I can't think of two better reasons why you should go. Also there'll be beer there, so that's three reasons.

  1. Wish I could go!

Know of any events in the Colchester area? University of Essex has put a ban on LARPing on campus so there's no societies etc, so I can never really play - same with things like HvZ.

    Why me!

    1. If you're into Nerf, check out the Britnerf forum. You might be able to find other nerfers in your area to organise games with.

    2. Don't see why that would be an issue, surely there are parks in the local area? I've had LARP battles and Nerf wars in my local park and that's in central London.
